How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

How often should you rotate your tires? The recommended interval for when to rotate tires is every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. It should be noted that you should always defer to recommendations set in place in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Still, the above range should apply in most cases. Of course, the exact amount of how many miles to rotate tires on your car will depend on many factors, like how you drive, what season it is, what type of tires are on your car, and more. Learn About Rotating Tires on 2WD Vehicles

Different Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram vehicles come equipped with different kinds of drivetrain systems. Vehicles with front-wheel and rear-wheel drive have power sent from the engine to just two wheels (FWD and RWD are two types of 2WD). In vehicles equipped with 2WD, the tires that receive power directly will almost always wear more quickly than the other two tires. With that in mind, when rotating tires on cars with either FWD or RWD, keep these tips in mind:

  • For All 2WD Cars: Tire rotations should generally be completed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Consult your owner’s manual for exact recommendations.
  • If You’re Performing a DIY 2WD Tire Rotation: Remember to flip sides when moving the tires that receive power. In other words, in an RWD car, the rear right tire will go on the front left and vice versa. In an FWD car, the front right tire will go to the rear left and vice versa. Move the other two tires to the same side. If it’s helpful, you can visualize the tires that receive power directly moving in an “X” pattern if you draw out the rotation pattern and the other two tires moving in parallel vertical lines, backward or forward.
  • Remember the Impact Driving Habits Can Have: Off-roading, racing, hard cornering, and accelerating/braking, and more will affect how often you need to rotate your tires in Georgetown or Cameron. Of course, driving habits also affect how often you need to change your brakes or get new tires, get oil changes, and receive other maintenance.

AWD Tire Rotation Tips

Curious how many miles to rotate tires on an AWD car or SUV? AWD vehicles have slightly different wear patterns since each tire wears differently and at different speeds.

So, how many miles should you go between tire rotations with an AWD vehicle? Experts recommend that the recommended interval for rotating tires on an AWD vehicle is between 3,000 to 5,000 miles. However, you should still check your owner’s manual for exact specifications and recommendations for your specific Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram vehicle. Don’t remember when you last rotated your tires? It’s a good idea to have this crucial service performed ASAP.

Another good rule of thumb is to have your tires rotated every time you have your oil changed (assuming your vehicle’s oil change interval is also between every 5,000 to 7,500 miles — some new vehicles can go longer between oil changes).

Why Rotate Tires?

Now you know roughly how many miles to wait before rotating your tires. But why should you rotate your tires at all? Aside from creating more even wear patterns, doing so can have these benefits (and, potentially, more!):

  • Improved traction on slippery roads
  • Less noise on the road
  • Better fuel economy
  • Improved ride quality and tauter handling
  • Reduced stress on the vehicle’s drivetrain
