What’s the difference between all-wheel and 4-wheel drive? Is AWD or 4WD right for your everyday travels? Many Georgetown and Cameron drivers ask us about AWD vs. 4WD every day, and we know the terms can be confusing. Both are excellent choices for superior handling and grip both on- and off-road. But, they serve different purposes for different types of drives. Get to know whether AWD or 4WD is your best bet, and test drive a few models at Nyle Maxwell CDJR of Taylor!
All-wheel drive or AWD is a type of drivetrain configuration. In an AWD model, the engine torque is sent to the front and rear axles into all four wheels via differentials. This allows for better control and traction on the College Station roads. There are two primary types of all-wheel drive systems.
You’ll find all-wheel drive on a number of modern vehicles. This includes muscle cars like the Dodge Challenger, SUVs like the Dodge Durango, and minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica.
So, what about 4-wheel drive? 4WD is a traditional 4×4 drivetrain. While both drivetrains send engine power to the front and rear axles, the 4WD system is more specifically designed. The engine power can be routed to the left and right wheels, which allows for even greater control. This is a huge advantage when it comes to off-road driving, which is why you’ll find 4WD on truck-based platforms. You can find 4-wheel drive on adventure-ready SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Wagoneer, along with trucks like the RAM 1500 or a used Chevy Silverado 1500.
