How Often Do I Need an Oil Change?
We were often told that we should be changing the oil in our vehicles every 3,000 miles, but auto manufacturers are now singing a different tune. Years ago it was a good idea to change the oil and oil filter more frequently, but advances in engine materials and oil have changed that.
Most manufacturers recommend intervals of 7,500 miles or more, although, it can vary depending on the manufacturer or type of engine. It’s best to consult your owner’s manual to see how often you should change your oil and what type of oil to use.
Under more severe driving conditions it is suggested that you change your oil more frequently. These conditions include: extensive stop-go driving, frequent trailer towing/hauling, driving in extreme cold or heat, and frequent short-distance driving.
If changing your oil every 7,500 miles or more doesn’t sit well with you, try going every 6 months, because changing your oil every 3,000 miles is probably a waste of money unless your vehicle is older.
